Claws Out is a 3rd person shooter where you choose between multiple bullets which will have different effects. The player will find himself against several enemies at the same time, and will have to use his revolver to defeat them.
We won the "Best Art Award" on Tecnogames 2022, because of that we had the opportunity to present our game on the IndieDevDay 2022.
Now that I introduced the game, I will explain all the things we had to do in order to complete the development.
In this project, I've worked as an environment artist with a team formed by eight people. We had three months to develop a video game, so we started thinking what kind of game could we do.
We thought that it could be great to make a Steampunk game focused on combat, so we mixed some ingredients to make that happen: steampunk + mafia + FPS + bullets with different effects.
Once we had the idea clear, we started creating the first prototype of the game. To do so, we all started creating concepts and documentation in order to clarify what the game was and how we were going to make it on time.
This is an environment concept I've made for the prototype of the game.
Then we build a blockout of the first stage of the map using the level design document (LDD) as a reference.
Once we finished prototyping, we started with the Alpha. The map was redesigned, so the artists had to make again the blockout. Also, we made a more detailed one with some assets. The character was added too with a placeholder shooting pose.
For the Beta, we started adding textures to the assets we had made previously and created more to fill the map, that was redesigned once again to make it bigger. Also, we added some animations to make the movement feel smoother.
I've also made the gun of Dolores, the main character of the game. You can see the evolution of the gun on the image below.
To add textures to the tunnels, I started using Quixel Mixer, that gave me all the necessary tools to design the materials I was searching for.
With all of this ready, we finished the Beta, then we started working on the Gold.
We only had a couple of weeks to go from the Beta to the Gold, so we started working harder to finish on time. We were working hard on the textures and placing assets on the map, so it doesn’t feel empty when playing.
Not only that, but we also add decals, changed the illumination, updated the UI and the menus, and added all the animations necessary to make the movement feel great. These are some screenshots of the finished game.
It was tough weeks, but we managed to finish it on time. Below, you can find a gameplay of the Gold state of Claws Out.
